Hot Water
- Hot water represents about 19% of the average energy costs of a home.
- Water heaters use energy in three different ways; standby, demand and distribution. Standby is energy wasted while the hot water in the tank cools while it sits waiting to be used. Distribution is energy wasted through the pipes. Think of the last time you turned the hot water on, it took a few moments for it to turn warm and then more time for it to turn hot. The water started through the pipes very hot but lost its heat on the way to the faucet and the pipes gained the heat. (Maybe the pipes need additional insulation.)
- There are three basic types water heating systems; storage, tank less and solar. Solar is the most efficient of the systems and is very economical especially for homes with pools and hot tubs. Tank less hot water is the 2nd choice in efficiency as it does not lose energy by sitting in the tank. The water is only heated on demand.
