The paragraph below takes a minute to read, but it’s a great example of why the EPA and DOE recommend the whole-house approach. And it probably describes a problem in your home.

The duct system distributes warm air from the furnace to the house. Studies show about 30% of the warm air from the furnace never makes it inside the home because of leaks in the duct system. An obvious issue with the energy efficiency of the home, but there’s more. The leaking air creates pressure imbalances in the home that pulls air in, bringing moisture that may harm the materials in the structure and degrades the durability. Additionally, pollen and dust are being pulled in faster than they are filtered out which reduces the air quality in the home. Lastly, because some ducts leak and others don’t; some rooms are comfortable and others are not.

The example is one of hundreds where a symptom is obvious, but the real problem and the right solution are not. Unfortunately most contractors do not have the tools or training to correctly identify the real problem. They recommend what they know best which is usually a new furnace or air conditioner, windows or more insulation.
